South Sudan moves closer to oil pipeline to the south

South Sudan has moved closer to its target of gaining access to a pipeline to export its oil to the south.

The presidents of Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda have agreed to build two pipelines across East Africa.

One would run from South Sudan to the Kenyan port city of Lamu and the other would stretch from Rwanda to Mombasa.

Currently, South Sudan exports its oil through Sudan and supplies are often disrupted as the two countries disagree over pricing and security issues.

The three-way agreement between the presidents was confirmed by Uganda's foreign minister, Sam Kutesa.

Last week,Sudan's President Omar Hassan al-Bashir threatened again to stop oil flows across its border with South Sudan, unless South Sudan stops supporting rebels operating across the shared frontier.

South Sudan denies supporting rebels and, in turn, accuses Khartoum of backing insurgents on its soil.

When South Sudan became independent nearly two years ago, it took 75% of the oil reserves of Sudan.

However, Sudan retained the pipeline infrastructure, as well as the refineries and export terminal at Port Sudan on the Red Sea.

East Africa is experiencing an energy boom at the moment, after oil and gas discoveries in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.

New railway

Mr Kutesa said the three countries had also agreed to build a railway line from Kenya through Uganda to Rwanda.

'It was agreed to revamp the existing railway network and also construct a standard gauge railway line in Kenya and Uganda and also extend it to Rwanda," he said.

Mandla Mandela 'stormed out of meeting

Johannesburg - Newspapers in Gauteng reported on Wednesday that former president Nelson Mandela's grandson Mandla Mandela stormed out of a family meeting in Qunu, in the Eastern Cape, after a disagreement.

Three sources told The Star the family was torn between Mandla Mandela - who wants Mandela buried at his birthplace in Mvezo - and the rest, who felt that his wish to be buried next to his children should be respected.

The Star reported that a Mandela family meeting held in Qunu on Tuesday was to discuss a "significant" family matter.

The meeting was attended by the family, United Democratic Movement leader Bantu Holomisa and Public Service and Administration Minister Lindiwe Sisulu.

The Times reported that a group of elders planned to fly to Gauteng to assess the critically ill Mandela and decide what to do.

It reported that the meeting on Tuesday had focused on Mandela's health, and on the moving of the family graves from Qunu to Mvezo in 2011. The graves were moved by Mandla Mandela.

The Times reported that the family wanted the graves of three of Mandela's children - sons Makgatho and Thembekile and daughter Makaziwe - to be in Qunu.

The newspaper reported that it understood that a fuming Mandla Mandela, who moved the graves without consulting the family, stormed out of the meeting.

Mandla Mandela could not be reached for comment.

Digger arrives at Mandela gravesite

Mthatha - Two hours after Mandela family members and government officials met at the family home in Qunu, a machine digger arrived at what is believed to be the planned grave site of Nelson Mandela.

Tuesday was a day of heightened activity after the world started preparing to take its leave of the 94-year-old, reported Beeld.

There was increased activity not only in Qunu but also at the Pretoria hospital where Madiba has been receiving treatment and at his former home in Vilakazi Street, Soweto.

On Tuesday, Mandela family representatives, local clan leaders and national government officials landed at Mthatha airport and met at the Mandela home for two hours before leaving again for Mthatha.

Among them were Public Service and Administration Minister Lindiwe Sisulu and UDM leader Bantu Holomisa, who is said to be involved closely in the funeral arrangements.

After the meeting, Madiba’s grandson, Ndaba Mandela, then went to inspect the gravesite. The digger arrived about two hours later and was delivered by a truck. It has been parked about 150m from the gravesite.

Chief Mfundo Mtirara, who is related to Madiba, and is the headman of the Matyenenqgina near Qunu, said the family meeting was about “very sensitive issues” and the contents of the discussions were only meant for family.

South African Airways Named Africa’s Best Carrier For 11th Year

VENTURES AFRICA – An international customer approval survey has named the South African Airways (SAA) as the best carrier in Africa for the eleventh successive year.

This was disclosed at the Skytrax World Airline Awards function at the 50th International Paris Air Show late on Tuesday this week.

The accolade – which gives an international point of reference for the carrier’s quality – makes SAA one of the most decorated carriers in the continent.

Skytrax, which is an autonomous air travel enquiry body, undertakes a “customer satisfaction survey” in 18 million business and leisure air travellers.

The winner is decided by participants from 160 countries.

The survey looks at more than 200 carriers. This includes the biggest global airlines and smaller local carriers.

The study assess travellers’ approval on 41 key performance pointers comprising check-in, boarding, on-board seat comfort, cabin cleanliness, food, beverages, inflight entertainment and staff service.

Suretha Cruse, SAA’s customer service executive, said the state-owned airline is aware that efficiency is mostly needed in an airline like SAA.

“We acknowledge that a fundamental cultural mind-set change towards an efficient service-driven organisation is required in what is an extremely competitive industry.”

The troubled SAA has won six awards in the past six months.

These include the on-time execution service prize by Flightstats as the victor in the Middle East and Africa region and African cargo airline of the year from STAT Times.

But things have not been going well at the management level of the carrier. Late last year, almost half of the board led by the struggle heroine Cheryl Carolus resigned from citing government intereference.

Mum jailed for exposing her butt to a bus full of children

Sometimes the moon isn’t too bright.

Lisa Grant, a Virginia mom, will spend her upcoming weekends behind bars because she mooned a school bus full of 45 children in Suffolk, Fox News reports.

The 34-year-old admits that she had a heated exchange with the bus driver, who sent a note home saying that Grant’s son was misbehaving. A school spokesperson said the note was a warning.

Grant wasn’t going to take that from the bus driver —no ifs, ands, or butts about it. She was accused of showing skin in the school bus’ general direction last November, though she still denies she mooned the driver.

“I did not moon the bus. I did not flash,” she told WAVY. “I take full responsibility for my actions, for my disorderly conduct, for my arguing with her. I take full responsibility for that, but she also deserves the same thing I got.”

The Associated Press reports that she was convicted this week of disorderly conduct and sentenced to six months in jail, with five months of her sentence suspended. She’ll be serving her time on the weekends only.

You’re keeping him healthy! 7 shocking benefits of sex for men

…. in addition to relieving his stress from work, and improving his self-esteem, sex can actually fend off depression….

Feel like he’s always thinking about sex? Well, according to research, he probably is about 19 times a day. But maybe there’s a good reason for it: His life could depend on it. Orgasms can work wonders for your health, from easing your menstrual cramps to lowering your risk of diabetes, but what about your guy? In honor of Men’s Health Month, we count down the ways your lovin’ is lending him a helping hand. Make sure he thanks you for keeping him in tip-top shape.

1. Keeps His Ticker Strong You already make his heart go pitter-patter when you walk into the room, but turns out, you’re protecting his heart in other ways too. According to research from Queens University in Belfast, men who have sex three or more times a week cut their heart attack and stroke risk in half. Could this be the trick to keeping the doctor away?

2. Improves His Mood Sexy time keeps your guy in good spirits. Well, duh. But, in addition to relieving his stress from work, and improving his self-esteem, sex can actually fend off depression by releasing those feel-good endorphins. If he’s still bummed about the Yankees’ loss, I think you know the solution.

3. Ensures A Good Night’s Sleep Getting enough shuteye is essential to your health, affecting everything from your mood to your weight. One way to ensure he gets enough zzz’s? You guessed it, a roll in the hay. Oxytocin, the “love hormone” released during orgasam, is a natural sleep aid, especially for men — which may also explain why he passes out afterward.

4. Decreases His Prostate Cancer Risk Having sex regularly may protect your guy from getting cancer later in life. A National Cancer Institute survey found that guys who averaged 21 ejaculations a month had a 33% lower risk of prostate cancer than those with just four to seven ejaculations a month.

5. Erases Pain For you, the big O can relieve those awful menstrual cramps, but it’s also a natural painkiller for your guy. In one study, 48 people inhaled oxytocin vapor and then had their fingers pricked. The oxytocin cut their pain threshold by more than half. Headaches, back pain, you name it — the hormone does wonders.

6. Keeps Him Fit
Trying to whip him into shape? Look no further than the bedroom. In addition to strengthening his stomach, back and pelvic floor, a 30-minute romp torches about 200 calories. If we’re talking a more intense, hour-long session for a 190-lb man, that burns about 413 calories. Talk about a total body workout.

7. Helps Him Live Longer
Research has shown having regular sex makes you look more youthful — possibly even 10 years younger — but it turns out, it’s more than just an illusion. Sex can actually slow the aging process. A study from the British Medical Journal found that men who had the highest frequency of orgasms had a death rate 50% lower than those who did not ejaculate frequently. Goodbye, wrinkles.

Libya army chief of staff 'resigns' after deadly clashes

Libyan army chief of staff Youssef al-Mangoush has reportedly resigned after 30 people died in clashes between protesters and a militia in Benghazi.
The General National Congress accepted his resignation in a session on Sunday, sources at the assembly say.

The clashes erupted when protesters gathered outside the Libya Shield Brigade premises demanding it disband.

The government has struggled to tackle the presence of armed militias since Col Gaddafi's death in 2011.

The BBC's Rana Jawad says Mr Mangoush, who was due to be replaced soon anyway, was seen as ineffective and to blame for much of the country's problems with the militias.

The army chief submitted his resignation in a closed door session of the GNC, a member of congress told the BBC.

It comes as part of a wider decree, according to the same source, which also includes the appointment of a judge to investigate and break up the militias, as well as declare three days of mourning.

Mr Mangoush's deputy, Salem al-Gnaidy, will stand in as acting army chief until a new one is chosen, Reuters news agency reports.

Army takeover

A doctor at Benghazi's main hospital says that some of the deaths were caused by gunshot wounds to the chest and that there were six cases of amputations among the dozens of people injured.

Following Saturday's violence, the Libyan army said it would take control of all bases run by the Libya Shield Brigade in Benghazi.

The main headquarters, where the clashes took place, is already in the hands of a special forces unit in the city, an army spokesman said.

While it is not clear what the handover means in the long-term, it is clear that officials have not used the word "dismantle" - a key demand of the protesters - our correspondent says.

MasterCard rates Johannesburg and Lagos as Africa’s Most Popular Destinations

AFRICAN MAIL – Johannesburg and Lagos have emerged the most popular destinations in Africa with over 4.6 million expected visitors in 2013, according to MasterCard’s recently released third annual Global Destination Cities Index.

Johannesburg ranked the highest on the continent both in total number of visits and international visitors totalling 2,544,013 and generating the sum of $2.7 billion while Lagos will have 2,164,897 visitors which will generate about $922 million, the report showed.

Eleven other African cities were including Cape Town, Durban, Nairobi, Cairo, Casablanca, Accra, Beira, Kampala, Maputo, Tunis and Dakar, were rated on the Index.

The top three cities from which visitors to Johannesburg originate are London (299,000 people), Frankfurt (187,000 people), and Dubai (157,000 people).

Philip Panaino of the Division President of MasterCard South Africa, says that: “Four of the top five outbound destinations for Johannesburg travellers are within Africa. Maputo and Harare top the list; London comes in third, followed by Lagos and Windhoek.”

Lagos, which is referred to as an emerging city, has witnessed considerable growth in the past year following a fall in visits in 2010 and 2011. In 2010 and 2011, Lagos suffered a severe contraction, with visitor numbers declining by about 20 per cent each year, before recovering to around 6.9 per cent growth in 2012.

The MasterCard Index of Global Destination Cities is reached using the criteria of the number of total international visitor arrivals and the cross-border spending by visitors in the destination cities.

Togo Gets $14m IDA Grant For Infrastructure Development.

AFRICAN MAIL-  A $14 million grant by the International Development Association (IDA) has been approved by the World Bank’s Board of Executive Directors to support Togolese government efforts to rehabilitate roads, drains and other infrastructure, scale-up urban services, and strengthen institutional capacity.

These funds will support the rebuilding of some ten kilometers of drainage infrastructure in Lome and of about five kilometers of secondary road networks.

The drainage works are expected to benefit some 48,000 people while the road upgrades will benefit as many as 27,500 people with all-season transport access, a World Bank press release said.

According to Madani M. Tall, World Bank Country Director for Togo, “Togo, together with most countries in West Africa, suffered from heavy precipitation and flooding during the fall of 2010 rainy season,” The proposed rehabilitation works will improve access to basic services and contribute to creating jobs and supporting the government in its efforts to build resiliency to future flooding impacts.”

World Bank Task Team Leader for the project Kwabena Amankwah-Ayeh said, “The labour-intensive methods for drain rehabilitation to be used under the project will clearly contribute to the livelihoods of local residents in the project neighborhoods. Moreover, the road rehabilitation efforts supported by these funds will improve and lower the cost of transportation in low-income neighborhoods located far from job opportunities.”

“I am pleased to continue supporting this project and the jobs and benefits it brings to the people living in and near Togo’s capital city,” he added.

Ghana To Deport 124 Chinese Illegal Gold Miners

AFRICAN MAIL - Ghana has detained more than 124 Chinese nationals for their involvement in illegal gold mining after a raid which took place near gold mines where the Chinese were living, the Chinese embassy in Ghana said.

Ghana is Africa’s biggest gold producer after South Africa, producing more than 1.6 million ounces in the first half of 2012. The arrests made on its mine fields are part of an on-going crackdown on foreign nationals working illegally in small-scale gold mines, reserved by law for Ghanaians.

“We have cautioned all the Chinese people in Ghana to strictly abide by the related laws and regulations”, said Yu Jie, a spokesman for the Chinese embassy in Ghana.

The issue has been widely discussed in the Chinese media, with some miners reportedly saying they want to leave but face hefty fines. Majority of the detained workers are from the poor county of Shanglin in China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Chinese media say.

Chinese officials at the Chinese embassy are negotiating the release. They said most of the miners were detained for several reasons ranging from the immigrants expired residential permit, and without their visas.

In April, a ban was declared on Chinese immigrants engaging in illegal gold mining in the central region of Ashanti, as well as in western and eastern regions, to stop environmental damage.

The detained miners are being held at an immigration centre in Accra, and are awaiting deportation to China.

Nigeria's army gunning for Boko Haram

"It was like a military coup here two months ago when all the government officials ran away," said a white-bearded elder in Kirenowa, as he described how his village in northern-eastern Nigeria came under the control of the Islamist group known as Boko Haram"
"We were in real difficulty when Boko Haram were here; life was terrible - they extorted our money," he told the BBC in the village which lies just 40km (24 miles) from the porous border with Cameroon.

"They were moving around in the village with their cars - they went to [nearby] places like Chikunguldo and Wulgo as well as inside Chad."

A short distance along the sandy road within the district of Marte there are the hallmarks of the militants; the burnt-out church and the remains of the village police station which was also gutted by fire.

In front of the roofless, blackened building is the carcass of a burnt car.

The Nigerian military offered to take journalists in a protected convoy to these areas of Borno state in an effort to highlight what it describes as key gains in the fight against Boko Haram.

Just over three weeks ago President Goodluck Jonathan declared a state of emergency in the north-east.

He announced a renewed military offensive after making the somewhat surprising announcement that Nigerian territory had been seized by Boko Haram.

Earlier this year Boko Haram's black flag replaced Nigeria's green and white one in several villages of Borno state, including Marte - a sign that the insurgent were under little pressure from the Nigerian armed forces.     BBC News - Nigeria's army gunning for Boko Haram

Egypt's president dismisses calls for early vote

CAIRO (AP) — Egypt's embattled president is dismissing opposition calls for early presidential elections in a show of confidence ahead of his first anniversary in office.

On June 30, Mohammed Morsi will mark one year in power as Egypt's first freely elected president following the 2011 uprising that toppled autocrat Hosni Mubarak.

In remarks to the state-run Al-Ahram newspaper on Friday, Morsi said the calls for an early vote are both "absurd and illegal."

He warned against violence during upcoming demonstrations that the opposition is planning for the anniversary to demand his ouster.

During Morsi's year in power, Egypt has witnessed deadly bouts of violence and mass street protests.

Opponents claim the president has caused deep polarization in Egypt. Morsi accuses the opposition of instigating violence.

Sudan To Import Iraqi Oil On Credit

AFRICAN MAIL  – Investment Minister of Sudan, Mustafa Osman Ismail, disclosed on Wednesday that oil-rich Iraq has arranged to carry across oil to the African country and agreed to delay payment.

“The Iraqi government agreed to provide Sudan, during our visit, with oil which we have to pay only at some point later,” Reuters quoted Ismail as saying.

“There is now a technical team from the Sudanese petroleum ministry (in Iraq) to discuss technical issues of the deal in terms of volumes and payments.”

Sudan has been battling to satisfy home-grown demand for oil products after most of its crude oil production was lost in 2011 when South Sudan became an independent state.
Sudan has always seen oil as a revenue generator.

International Criminal Court rejects Libya request to try Saif al-Islam Gaddafi

International Criminal Court (ICC) judges have rejected Libya's request to annul the international arrest warrant for the son of the late Moammar Gaddafi and let the country's new government try him in Tripoli.

The ICC ruled that the Libyan government is not yet capable of holding a fair trial for Seif al-Islam Gaddafi by itself, and judges said the country's new leaders are obliged under international law to hand him over to the court in The Hague.

Whether the government in Tripoli will be willing – or able – to transfer Gaddafi to The Hague are both open questions. Gadhafi was captured by a militia group as he was trying to flee to neighbouring Niger in the aftermath of Libya's 2011 civil war.

Kenya At 50 has little to celebrate – Alex Ndungu Njeru

Kenya turned fifty on Saturday, no mean feat by itself, the founders, men and women who fought to establish Kenya as an independent republic had a unique vision for this country. At inception the Kenyan state was beset with a certain set of challenges that needed swift addressing, the first task of the post-colonial government was to eradicate illiteracy (Ujinga), Poverty (umaskini), and disease (ugonjwa). The eradication of these three problems has proven quite the bane for Kenya, for Kenya’s first government and governments thereafter. Older generation Kenyans especially those that had the opportunity of colonial rule, have hang-ups to this day, they nostalgically remember colonial times as the only time when institutions worked around the country. I know this has to be taken with a pinch of salt, save for the colonial gulag elderly Kenyans remember colonialism more for the strength of institutions around colonial times. What went wrong? Why haven’t we ever taken off? Why are we still on the ground flapping our wings helplessly in our quest to reach the sky?

We have not been a country without vision, for Kenya and Kenyans have always had a wonderful vision for this country, we have big dreams of a grand Kenya. We all know the direction this country ought to take. We are all aware of the enormous potential we as a nation posses. We are constantly reminded of how in the 1970s and early eighties we were at the same level of economic development as South Korea. We are told to emulate the South Asian tigers and embark on a path of exponential economic growth. We are a country infatuated by development but a country that does not court development in earnest. We are a people that constantly remind ourselves to forget that development does not just happen, it is made to happen. We ignore the fact that we cannot wish ourselves into prosperity, we have to plan and act in accordance in order to lead ourselves into the heights of development that we so desire. Why have we for the love of life never actualized our potential as a country? Which tide drowned the dreams of our founding fathers?

It sounds incredulous but the answer to our ineptness at the development game does not go beyond our nose. We have always known we suffer from a critical lack of leadership. But time and again we have gone forward to make the same terrible mistakes at the ballot. We have elected leaders not because of their ability to take the lead but rather for their ability satiate our appetite for freebies. Now we are up in arms we are calling them pigs. Well if they are Pigs we are the ones that fan their greed. Our leadership seems particularly bereft of ideas, any ideas I would say, you hear of leaders in places like Japan having policy frameworks named after them, like Abenomics for example, now I challenge you to mention a leader who has come with collaborative economic policy directions in the last 4 decades. Apart from their ability to deflower our economies, institutions and societies our politicians are oft times devoid of any thought.

A dereliction of key institutions seems to have set in immediately after colonial administrator left government. The rule of law was thrown to the dogs and the rule of the jungle was installed. Government policies were not so much geared towards development but rather the self-preservation of the leviathan state together with all those who extracted rent from it. After independence corruption became accepted and standard practice by the state officers, the rule rather than the exception.

In such a state of state, institutional and leadership paralysis, it is inconceivable that we can dare dream about development. We need to embark on an earnest exercise of strengthening our institutions in order for us to develop and achieve the visions of the founding fathers of this country. Social economic and political environment does not just happen, an environment capable of promoting and supporting development has to be put in place. The rule of law has to be institutionalized, respect for the private property is mandatory, inhibitive and excessive taxation has to be brought down to bare minimums, national plans and blue-prints policies that cut across political cycles have to be developed, The rate of national and private savings has to increase.

As a citizenry we have never taken charge of our development, we have not been vigilant enough to effect development. We have not demanded enough from ourselves and from our governments for us to develop. We have always been allured to that government that will come and end poverty, disease and illiteracy with a magic bullet. That government does not and will never exist. It is time we employed our creative faculties to achieve what we so much desire, and we have to take charge of our own development.

Google Injects $10.2m Into South Africa’s Power Project

AFRICAN MAIL – Google, the internet search engine giant, at the weekend said it had capitalised South Africa’s Jasper power project – set to be one of the largest solar installations in Africa – with R103 million ($10.2 million). The Jasper power project is a 96 megawatt solar photovoltaic plant to be constructed closer to Upington, a small town in South Africa’s Northern Cape Province. This comes shortly after Google announced that it plans to provide funding and assist in activating “wireless networks” in sub-Saharan Africa Google recently said it is in talks with relevant authorities from South Africa to Kenya in an effort to hook up a billion people in emerging markets The Jasper power project will be created and financed by the US project development firm, SolarReserve, solar farm developer, Intikon Energy and empowerment investment holding firm, the Khensani Group. The Public Investment Corporation (PIC), the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA), the Peace Humansrus Trust and Rand Merchant Bank will also provide financial backing to the project. After completion, the Jasper project will have the ability to generate adequate electricity to power 30,000 households in South Africa. “South Africa’s strong resources and supportive policies for renewable energy make it an attractive place to invest – which is why it had the highest growth in clean energy investment in the world last year,” Google’s director of energy and sustainability, Rick Needham, said in a statement. “Just as compelling are the economic and social benefits that the project will bring to the local community. Jasper will create approximately 300 construction and 50 permanent jobs in a region experiencing high rates of unemployment, as well as providing rural development and education programmes and setting aside a portion of total project revenues – amounting to approximately US$26-million over the life of the project – for enterprise and socio-economic development.”

Blogging Home The Bacon: The Linda Ikeji Story

AFRICAN MAIL – The history of blogging sounds like any other ’History of’ – not very exciting. Yet blogs, an online platform where people share information and opinions, provide some of the most exciting reads today. Hundreds of millions of blogs about politics, business and entertainment exist on the World Wide Web, how do you choose which ones to read? For many African readers, searching for the latest ‘gist’, gossip and celebrity news, it’s an easy choice. The Linda Ikeji blog is now a household name and undeniably one of the most profitable, exciting and often controversial, blogs in Africa. The blogger behind the medium, Linda Ikeji, is herself a fascinating woman. How she turned a once obscure practice into a money making machine and has successfully sustained it since 2006 is a testament to the commitment it takes to be an entrepreneur a creative industry. Linda shares freely today how she makes millions doing what she loves – blogging. In her characteristic casual writing style, she says “Now I don’t chase money anymore…it chases me.” Hers is a rags to riches story that emerged in the midst of controversy when radio presenter openly said she was not a role model. In response, Linda shared her story which was deeply personal with noteworthy business lessons. Linda Ikeji, a native of Nkwerre in Imo State, Nigeria, was born in 1980 to a struggling family, the second of seven children. From as early as 10 years old, Linda was writing. The fiction she penned down were praised by her friends and family and over time she cultivated a passion for news. Unlike many teenagers her age, Linda loved watching newscasters and interviews and by the time the opportunity presented to attend university in Lagos, her course choice was decided: Mass Communication. She was admitted to study English in university to her disappointment, but she decided to make the best of it. To support herself and her family through school, Linda began working at the age of 17, doing everything from waitressing and ushering to modelling and bartending, none of which paid a lot in the late 90s. She recalls, “I’d leave lectures, go to a hotel and sell beer from 1pm till 10pm. I did this for a few months. It wasn’t easy but I had to survive”. Linda worked hard, she was determined to succeed and become a journalist, her lifelong dream. In her second year of university however, she experienced a defining moment where she made a choice that would impact the rest of her life, particularly her decisions on avenues for earning money. Being a beautiful model with growing popularity, Linda was approached by several wealthy men looking for sexual favours in exchange for money – a common practice in many higher institutions. These men offered quick access to the easy lifestyle that was so prized among university girls yet excluded many from poor backgrounds. For an aspiring career woman and entrepreneur, the quick money held deep appeal. Yet Linda had decided early on never to give her body in exchange for money so when the temptation came, hungry, desperate Linda, battling family pressures to send money, was able to resist. Following her experience with nearly compromising her values, she renewed her commitment to hard work and living with dignity no matter the circumstances. After university she worked hard to break into the journalism trade, launching her media company, Blackdove Communications, a modelling agency and events management outfit. She also started what she describes in her first ever blog post as her “true passion”, her magazine called, FM & B. The first issue was released in 2006 and after discovering how capital-intensive and time-consuming magazine publishing was, only two more editions made it to print. Fortunately, in that same year, Bella Naija, another popular Nigerian blog, carried a story about Linda herself and for the first time, Linda began to see a new possibility to take her writing to the world. Blogging had all the charm: it was free except for the cost of an internet connection, easy to do and gave you access to millions of readers instantly. From that first Bella Naija blog post, she was sold. 7 years later, Linda Ikeji’s blog is averaging between than fifty and one hundred thousand visits every day from various countries. In fact, the blog has become a melting pot for Nigerians based at home and in the diaspora. Speaking about how others can turn something as unconventional as blogging into a multi-million naira business, Linda said “You have to love blogging. You can’t say I want to blog because I want to make money. It takes a stepping stone to get there. There are over a thousand blogs, but what will make people enjoy visiting your blog depends on the efforts you put into it. So, be passionate about it, be consistent, don’t blog once or twice in a week, blog everyday if you can, enjoy it, and love it.” Her advice is on par with the words of many success coaches and creative giants – love what you do and you will never have to work another day in your life. Although Linda began her business as a hobby, did it for four years before making any money and had no set goals for it at the beginning, she’s making the most of every opportunity that comes her way. Her blog generates millions of naira annually from advertisements run by companies and Linda has gradually moved into a field she calls ‘motivational writing’. Speaking about her first book It Takes You, Linda said “I hope more than anything else that everyone who reads this book learns something from it. I hope it changes their perception of some things and more than anything else I hope it inspires them to go out there and make something of themselves”. The money she earns has not only ended her family struggles but has brought her great influence in the entertainment industry and amongst young people. To her credit, her influence has been a force for change. By mobilising thousands of readers in her online community, Linda was able to lend a voice to Blessing Effiong, a young girl who had been detained for four years in prison without a trial. Four months after the story was reported on the blog, Blessing walked out of prison with her freedom, grateful to all her supporters including Linda Ikeji. The story of Linda Ikeji, Nigeria’s most popular blogger, shows that you can create value, and therefore a business and influence, from whatever you’re passionate about; and even when controversy abounds, there are many opportunities to do good. Whether you agree with her tactics and content or not, we have to hand it to Linda, she has entertained, engaged, inspired and provoked Nigerians for 7 years doing what she loves best. She has turned blogging into a lucrative business and shows no sign of stopping. (VENTURES AFRICA)
